Age is Just a Number: Start Your Fitness and Wellness Journey Today!

Actualizado: 5 nov 2024

Starting to work out as an adult has been a transformative decision for me, and I believe the best age to begin is whenever you feel ready to make a positive change in your life. While it's ideal to establish healthy habits early, I've learned that it's never too late to start exercising, focusing on emotional well-being, and maintaining proper nutrition. Each stage of adulthood offers unique opportunities and challenges, and understanding these can help tailor an approach that fits our lifestyles and goals.

In my 20s and 30s, I found that my body was generally more resilient, making it an excellent time to establish a solid fitness routine. This period was ideal for building muscle mass, improving cardiovascular health, and setting a foundation for lifelong fitness. It was also a crucial time for me to develop healthy emotional habits, such as stress management techniques and mindfulness practices, which supported my mental well-being. I focused on balanced meals that provided the energy needed for an active lifestyle, emphasizing whole foods and proper hydration.

I became a mother at the age of 19 and my life was more about taking care of my children more than anything else. At the same time I was studying and willing to finish my studies. I made my life more complicated than I should since I did not have my family around to help me or support me. Having lost my parents early in my life was very difficult for me so I had to be self sufficient and very proactive.

As I entered my 40s and 50s, maintaining fitness became more about preserving strength and flexibility while preventing injury. After having my fourth child I decided that it was a great time for me to incorporate strength training and flexibility exercises, such as cardio and weight lifting into my routine.

I discovered the profound healing effects of fitness as I embarked on my journey to overcome childhood trauma. Recognizing the need to address my emotional well-being, I turned to physical activity not just as a means to achieve a healthy body, but as a vital tool for mental resilience. Through regular exercise, I experienced the release of endorphins, often referred to as "feel-good" chemicals, which significantly improved my mood and reduced feelings of anxiety and depression.

Understanding that healing is a holistic process, I incorporated meditation and mindfulness practices into my routine. These practices helped me proactively manage stress and maintain mental clarity. By focusing on the present moment, I was able to cultivate a sense of peace and stability, which was crucial in addressing the lingering effects of trauma.

My dedication to fitness and mental health has not only transformed my own life but has also inspired others to explore the benefits of exercise and mindfulness. My journey exemplifies how a commitment to physical and mental well-being can lead to profound personal growth and healing, empowering individuals to overcome past adversities and build a healthier future.

Nutritionally, I focused on maintaining a balanced diet that supported bone health and reduced the risk of chronic diseases, incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.

Now, in my 50’s and beyond, exercise plays a critical role in maintaining my independence and quality of life. Emotionally, staying connected with my community and loved ones enhances my mental well-being, while activities like volunteering provide a sense of purpose. My nutrition focuses on nutrient-dense foods that support overall health, with an emphasis on calcium and vitamin D for bone strength.

Ultimately, I've realized that the best age to start working out and focusing on emotional and nutritional health is whenever you decide to commit to a healthier lifestyle. The key is to find activities and routines that you enjoy, making it easier to stick with them long-term. Whether you're in your 20s or your 60s, starting a fitness journey can lead to improved physical health, emotional resilience, and a better quality of life. Remember, it's never too late to take control of your health and well-being.
